President Trump took to his Twitter account on Sunday and let the American public know exactly what’s up with a DACA deal. Conservatives have hammered the president with charges of amnesty for even considering trading DACA for Democratic support for his border wall. Well, now it looks like that plan isn’t going to happen…
“DACA is probably dead because the Democrats don’t really want it,” Trump posted to Twitter on Sunday.
President Trump suggested that Nancy Pelosi and other congressional Democrats are preparing a government shutdown over the issue after they subsequently leaked details to the media.
“They just want to talk and take desperately needed money away from our Military,” Trump wrote.
The president’s comments come on the heels of remarks he made on Saturday. He said it was “too bad” that Democrats were not serious about reaching a DACA deal.
“I don’t believe the Democrats really want to see a deal on DACA,” President Trump commented. “They are all talk and no action. This is the time but, day by day, they are blowing the one great opportunity they have. Too bad!”
Trump has repeatedly urged a return to a merit-based system of immigration.
“I, as President, want people coming into our Country who are going to help us become strong and great again, people coming in through a system based on MERIT,” he wrote. “No more Lotteries! AMERICA FIRST.”
It’s obvious that Trump and his conservative supporters were never enthusiastic about a DACA deal. The President wants comprehensive immigration reform, including a border wall, and is willing to make some concessions to get it. A skilled negotiator in business knows that to strike a deal, you’ve got to give a little to get a little.
It’s unfortunate that the Democrats want to shut down the Federal government over something as trivial as amnesty. Do you see them wanting to close national parks and federal offices for regular, law-abiding citizens? No, you don’t.
The reason why is that they are desperate for votes. By making the “dreamers” into American citizens, they have just substantially increased their base.
